It is said that we know more about the surface of the moon than we do about our own oceans. While some might argue that the reason for that is simply because the moon is a barren rock hurdling through space, the fact remains that we still no more about our cosmic neighbor than we do about what is ostensibly our own back yard. However, each and every day we are making brand new discoveries about the watery depths that surround us. If you went on http://www.cable.tv/cable-deals/ and get all those special science channels then you have probably seen all the new types of fish we’ve uncovered and we’re discovering them every day in our mini-subs and through scuba diving. Diving is one of the most preferred methods when it comes to exploring the deep as it gives us a first-hand encounter with the unknown, unfortunately it does tend to limit where you can go. The deeper you get, the stronger the pressure and no human body is meant to stand up to that kind of weight. However, that doesn’t stop us from trying to learn and develop innovative ways to uncover the mysteries of the deep, but with so much to see, it may take generations before we know as much about the oceans as we do about the moon.

The University of Wisconsin’s Dive Club, also known as the Hoofer Scuba Club, schedules loads of diving activities throughout the year. If you go to their website, you can find their Calendar under Events, Trips, and Class Signup. Sign up for their e-mail list and they will keep you updated on all of their local dives, classes, and social events. Classes are held on every imaginable diving topic, including Beginners, Open Water, Rescue, Ice, Wreck, and Night Diving, among others. If you don’t see a class that meets your interests, they do try to accommodate special requests. The full explanation can be found at http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/debsevery/1/1314012395/tpod.html The Club tries to schedule classes at different times on different days throughout the year to accommodate as many schedules as possible. Local dives are also scheduled throughout the year, in Wisconsin and the Great Lakes area. They range from dives that last just a few hours nearby, to dives that require charter dive boats and camping gear or hotels. There is one dive they try to schedule over the winter break to a warm location, like some of their past dives to the Florida Keys, Bahamas, Belize, or Cozumel. Check out their Calendar online to find all of these events and more.

There are many people who follow the Dive Club and want to know when and where to find information on when the diving events they hold take place. There are several different resources available to people when the need arises to look at dive meeting schedules and actual school-sponsored events. Firstly, the best place to check for these schedules is online at the official website of the school or group. You will be able to find resources here which relate to events, parking for the events, and even expected turnout. This will help you plan your day around the event, enabling you to make enough time to see the show in person.

Another excellent way to check for upcoming diving events would be to phone in to the university and find a number for the department that handles information on sporting events. By calling the information hot-line, you should be able to hear an automated message which will relay the times and dates of any diving events taking place. If there is no information line and you are unable to phone the university, it might be wise to either make a trip down to the school yourself to ask, or check the local newspaper for more information.

The Hoofer Scuba Club is a tremendous asset to the University of Wisconsin. Membership is open to students, staff and Union members, and you have to be a Hoofer member to dive. The Club is able to offer scuba gear and tank rentals at very reasonable prices. They use the area’s bountiful natural resources to hold local diving events and classes. Classes range from the very basic for newbies to the most challenging, including Divemaster, Rescue, Wreck, Night, and Ice Diving. If they don’t have a class that covers something you want to learn about diving, all you have to do is request it – this Club can help! The Club holds weekly socials so you can meet lots of other scuba aficionados and maybe learn something new. They schedule regular dive trips around Wisconsin and the Great Lakes area for “murky” dives. Some of these trips include camping or hotel stays, and charter dive boats for open water dives. A trip over winter break is typically planned to a sunny, “saltwater” location; previous trips have been to Hawaii (Oahu), Bahamas, Florida Keys, Belize, and Cozumel. The UW Hoofer Scuba Club is a great dive club – check it out!Keep looking, there-s more: Bookshelf: Scuba Diving Malta – Gozo – Comino
